Tax Time: Lost or Stolen Tax File Number

As tax time approaches you should be thinking about the information needed to lodge your annual tax return.

Do you know your personal Tax File Number?

If you can’t find your tax file number (TFN) and have a myGov account linked to the ATO, you can find it online.

If you think that your TFN has been stolen or misused you should alert the ATO and your STS accountant as soon as possible.

Finding your TFN

You will need your TFN when starting a new job, applying for government benefits, lodging a tax return or applying for higher education loans.

If you already have a TFN and don’t remember the number, you can find it online in ATO online services via your myGov account.

Log in to myGov here

If you don’t have a myGov account, you can usually find your TFN on:

  • your income tax notice of assessment, if you have lodged a tax return
  • letters you have received from us, such as a statement of account
  • a payment summary or income statement (provided by your employer)
  • your superannuation account statement.

If you have used STS Accounting Group before to lodge your taxes, you can also ask us for your TFN.

If you still can’t find your TFN after checking these options, phone the ATO.
