Introducing Sam Higgins to our STS team
We welcome Sam Higgins (B.Com Acc) to our Winchelsea office, as both an Accountant and Business Development Manager.
We’ve loved getting to know Sam around the office and to share a little about his past, present and future we asked him these 5 questions:
What is your working background/qualifications?
I spent the initial 5 years of my time in the accounting industry at a local firm in my hometown of Ballarat (TRG Accountants). I began my time with TRG in January 2013 and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to complete a traineeship working part-time (approximately 30 hours/week) whilst completing 2 units a semester of my undergraduate studies in Accounting. By June 2017 I had completed my degree and continued into a permanent full-time position. At the end of 2017 I was persuaded to take on a role at Sky Accountants – a firm renowned for being a leader in innovative and progressive accounting practices. The past 12 months I have developed and expanded my knowledge in what the future of accounting holds through utilizing the rapidly evolving accounting technology that is giving time back to small-medium business owners through artificial intelligence and big data. 2018 has seen me commence my postgraduate studies towards becoming a Chartered Accountant with the aim to finalizing this additional qualification in 2020.
What is the favourite part of your role?
The past couple of years has seen me really come to understand what drives me as an accountant on a daily basis. I always knew that I never became an Accountant to just “crunch the numbers”. I am an outgoing personality and thoroughly enjoy engaging with my clients in order to foster mutually beneficial long-term relationships. I love that I have the opportunity each and every day to assist clients in achieving their short, medium and long term financial and lifestyle goals. For me I am satisfied in my job when I get to witness the success of my clients in their endeavours both personally and financially.
What are your personal goals?
Personally, my goals tend to align with what I love about my role. I want my career to develop so that I am able to become a trusted and sought after advisor to my clients in order to assist them on the road to financial security and then financial freedom. In the short term I will be putting much of my efforts into the completion of my CA postgraduate studies and on building a strong technical knowledge within the Accounting field.
What do you like to do for fun/social activities?
For those that know me well I am an absolute sport tragic and could put off writing a Uni assignment with preference given to watching a day’s play of Test Cricket. I’d be described as a one-eyed Essendon fan that wears his heart on his sleeve. When it’s not AFL or Cricket it’s everything in between, I love to socialise with family and friends and living just 10 minutes outside of Torquay I also love hitting the beach!
