ATO Scam Emails
Online scammers are getting craftier and craftier to mislead people into parting ways with money but also to siphon their login credentials or personal information.
Scammers can often pretend to be organisations such as ATO, MyGov, banks, Australia Post and even CityLink (LinkT)!
Some common scams include:
- Texts or Emails from a trusted supplier/organisation to notify you of your account being overdue with payment links to a scam website.
- Social media ads for a popular retailer/brand that take you through to a ‘fake’ website.
- Facebook accounts being hacked and then pretending to have tickets to a popular concert (Tay Tay) for sale.
- Emails from wealthy long lost ancestors who ask for your personal information so they can ‘give’ you some of their windfall.
- If you’re ever transferring a large amount of money by EFT it’s also worthwhile calling the supplier to check that the bank details are correct. Likewise if a supplier ever changes their bank details calling to confirm the updated details are correct and legitimate.
If ever you receive an email/text/phone call and you’re not quite sure here are a couple of suggestions:
- Don’t click on any links and don’t engage with the sender. You’re best to find the contact details for that organisation from an alternative source and call/contact them directly to check.
- Report the scam to the organisation
In the interim worthwhile habits to keep:
- Ensure you have a strong, unique passwords for all your logins – use a password manager app to help keep track of them and keep your passwords private.
- Refrain from using the same password for multiple logins. Try and have unique passwords for every login – especially your email and banking passwords!
- Activate two factor authentication
